This year’s trends ranged from latte beauty to dolphin skin – some even aspired to having skin like a glazed doughnut … But behind the fads lie some brilliant beauty stars that stand head and shoulders above the countless new launches we try out every year. All these make great gifts, too …
SCENT: Vanilla scents and perfumes that celebrate baking and warm spices filled the air this year – think notes of brown sugar, toffee and caramel. These were exemplified by Akro’s Bake eau de parfum, from €80….
and Heaven Can Wait from Frédèric Malle. Just try to wear Matiere Premieres Vanilla Powder eau de parfum, €145, without being complimented. This winter, Jo Malone London’s Ginger Biscuit cologne ticks the tasty boxes.
SKINCARE: We fell for Dr Barbara Sturm skincare, via a beautiful facial at the Castle Spa, Dromoland (my spa experience of the year, for the setting, therapists and attention to detail), and returned to an old favourite, Oskia – I’d forgotten how good it is.
For pharmacy finds, I rate Boots No7 Derm Solutions; and Neutrogena’s Retinol Boost, making vitamin A foolproof.
For homegrown skincare, Seabody and Ground Wellbeing are flying high.
Need an eye cream that works? ImageMD Collagen Recovery Eye Gel (€121.50; www.image skincare.ie).
INNOVATION: I tried Jones Road’s foundation and was an instant convert. Founder Bobbi Brown simply knows what our faces need in our 50s and beyond. Her glowgiving Miracle Balm is my most-used product of the year.www.jonesroadbeauty.com
LIP COLOUR: Buy one lipstick and refill it. Chanel’s is the dream: a glass object that’s both beautiful and useful. There aren’t many lipsticks that are also heirlooms.www.chanel.com
Clarins’ Joli Rouge (€29) range is a good option, too. www.clarins.ie
MASCARA: Invest in a good one. For me, that’s Victoria Beckham’s, and Gucci Westman’s ; more affordable options are Sculpted by Aimee’s and Catrice Glam & Doll. www.cultbeauty.com
HAIR: Sam McKnight’s haircare is now at Brown Thomas; don’t be without his heat-protective hairspray. Act+Acre, and new Irish-made Remi, both focus on scalp care, as does Aveeno’s affordable haircare.www.remi.ie
