Summer means colour. But we don’t necessarily have to wear pastels, or floral dresses: plain or monochrome linens and cottons, paired with some hot pops of beauty colour, on nails, eyes or lips, offer a cool alternative. Summer inevitably beckons us towards gelato shades for nails, such as cool, clean pistachio: we love this Matcha Latte gel shade from www.leminimacaron. and pale Mimosa by Manucurist (above, €14; www. manucurist.com), a Parisian brand that excels in chic shades. Try also Nailberry’s subtle colours, from Wild Sage to Lavender Fields, at Space NK (€20.50). It’s the time of year to carry off shocking pink or Yves Klein blue on fingers and toes. (Though, perversely, this often makes us reach for the Rouge Noir, as a palate-cleanser – an inky rich shade can look brilliant with a cool shirt, as Uma Thurman proved so memorably.)

As for make-up, in theory I love the idea of wearing fullscale violet eye colour, especially when it’s as pretty as Chanel’s (below, €40) – there are shades of burnt orange and pistachio available, too – but feel a coloured mascara is more doable. Yes to lavender lashes! And when it comes to lip colours, we are going balmier now – a hydrating, sorbet juiciness feels appealing, and more forgiving of lines around the lips. Those of us with indelible memories of 1980s lip liner can struggle with the idea of returning to them but they can be helpful when you’re 50-plus, as a perimeter for lip colour, and to add more definition to lips. I love the Kosas ones, as they come in a handy range of natural lip-coloured tones; their Wet Lip Oil Gloss, €23, is easy to wear, too – try the soft Bare shade; www.spacenk.com.

I’m still using the Rhode lip tints (€20, www.rhodeskin.com), liking their sheeny texture and pretty shades. Finally, for a welcome splash of colour in your bathroom, the new Hermès bath collection features delicious scents such as zingy rhubarb; the washbags, in vibrant primary shades, are glorious too. @sarahhalliwellbeauty
