This time of year there’s a lot of talk about holiday wardrobes – whether it’s where to find the best summer dresses or how to build a hard-working capsule wardrobe for your getaway. Often, however, the reality of dressing for summertime at home couldn’t be more different and requires pieces that are the antithesis of the Balearic beach buys currently in the new-in section of your favourite retailers.
Indeed, there’s a host of clothing you won’t see on a summer wish list that really are Irish summer essentials. For example, in the fashion world, April onwards is seen as ‘trench season’ but how many times do you end up reaching for that kind of coat during the summer on a rainy or chilly day? Equally, a pair of three-quarter length trousers is a staple that will see you through inclement or chilly days, while still feeling summery. Likewise, a long-sleeved T-shirt is invaluable when the wind gets up. There’s a need for cropped jackets, too. A lightweight quilted jacket is good to have on hand: a pretty pattern will take the sting out of the fact that you have to wear one! When it comes to footwear, the reality is that we may not want to show our toes all the time – maybe you’re at work or maybe you have yet to book a pedi! – so a pair of closed toe slip-ons (try Birkenstock’s Boston mule, upgraded this summer in black leather, rather than beige) are the most hard-working items you can buy. As for bags? We’ll always say that a basket bag is a fast-track to creating a summer mood, no matter the rest of your outfit (see our favourites here). Shop an edit of Irish summer heroes below.
