The best kit for a day at the beach? Consider the below …

You’re all set for a day at the beach: what do you need to bring? Taking for granted that you have your summer holiday staples sorted (see here for an edit of great getaway buys) prioritise space in your beach bag for a few essentials; sunglasses, a hair claw for getting your hair out of your face (great in blustery sea breezes, too), a shirt for throwing around your shoulders if you can feel yourself getting burned or for donning as a cover-up for the walk to the beach bar, and a great floppy hat are key (we love the drama of this oversized hat by Jacquemus – it’s easier to stow in a bag than a straw hat, too).

Striped cotton beach shirt, €142.95; www.raefeather.com.

Oversized sun hat, Jacquemus, €119; www.mytheresa.com.

Tortoiseshell hair claw, €22; www.arket.com.

Striped beach towel, €17, at Marks & Spencer.

What about beauty? We asked Beauty Editor of THE GLOSS Sarah Halliwell to weigh in. “Being honest, beyond plenty of suncream, I’d prioritise space in my beach bag for books over beauty, every time. See here for some good facial suncreams, while for body, there are lots of nifty options in the Boots Soltan range. A wide-brimmed hat is your key beach accessory, to shade your precious skin (and hair) from the sun. Take a face mist for cooling down. Throw a hydrating lip balm in, too – I’d go for a Clarins Natural Lip Perfector, (I love the Intense one in berry shade no18) as it’s vanilla-scented and has a nice colour tint, while moisturising the lips. A hair oil can be a good thought too, if your hair is prone to frizziness in the sun. K18 Molecular Repair Hair Oil is lightweight and comes in a mini dropper bottle, €55.25 at www.millies.ie – it’s good for smoothing hair and adding shine. And finally, a post-beach skin tip: Clarins’ new Cryo-Flash Cream-Mask is amazingly cooling and restoring after a day in the sun (€64, at www.clarins.ie),” says Halliwell.
