At this point in the summer season, we often tire of our wardrobes – we’ve worn shorts, pretty dresses and boho buys on repeat. We’re craving the structure and freshness of a new season, but we also want to feel summer-y (because: we’re Irish and we’re going to milk the last few weeks of August). What to do? It’s worth looking at a sophisticated key piece that will inject a new feeling into your regular wardrobe rotation. The addition of a great blazer to put on over shorts and a tank top, or a polished bag to use for your next outing, instead of a beachy basket one, could be all it takes to whip your look into shape – and prolong the life of your summer buys. Not only are the five pieces below low on effort, they’ll smarten up your summer look in a flash.

Nothing puts manners on your wardrobe like a crisp shade of burgundy or raspberry. Not only will it add depth to the summery colour palette you have on rotation, it looks super luxurious. Wear with linen shorts now and jeans when the weather turns cooler. Burgundy soft French terry sweatshirt, €49; www.arket.com

Tiring of white and light denim? Try a black pair in style of the moment, the turn-up. Slouchy and effortlessly cool, they’re best worn paired with black sandals now and trainers or kitten heels come autumn. Black facade turn-up jeans, €99, at COS.

Nothing injects structure into your wardrobe like a blazer, particularly after a summer of loose fits and relaxed shapes. Yellow is a big trend for pre-fall, particularly pale shades with echoes of off white and cream. We’d style this blazer now with Bermuda shorts and a white tank, then further into the season we’d pair it with tailored trousers. Cream Epona pinstriped jacket, BA&SH, €315, at Seagreen.

Trade up a beach bag for something more polished. A black micro tote adds edge to soft summer dresses and looks equally as good with denim and tailoring. Black Bou croc-effect mini bag, €375; www.ganni.com.

Smarten up with a novel take on the wrap dress – we love this one in a monochrome print. It’s the perfect beachside addition but equally would look great belted over jeans or black stirrup leggings. Black and white logo-print wrap dress, €650; www.toteme.com.
