Dublin artist Ana Carey draws inspiration from Picasso and Rodin in her new exhibition of sculpture which showcases over 40 pieces representing her diverse range of styles, from contemporary to traditional …
How did your interest in art begin?
My fascination with art began at a young age when I watched my mother sculpt, changing her music and making the odd cuppa. Her stillness, poise, and focused dedication captivated me. Witnessing contentment in motion for the first time, I was hooked.

Do you have any muses?
Drawing inspiration from the iconic techniques of Picasso and Rodin, my work reflects their sculptural approach and vibrant use of colour while focusing on the human form. I create from my own memories and experiences, rather than external images, which imbues my work with a personal and authentic touch. My passion is not only to showcase my work but also to connect with fellow art enthusiasts and collaborate when the opportunity arises.

How have your artworks evolved?
My style is ever evolving and demonstrates my interest in colour and how I am intrigued by the human form. Creating art has always been about shared energy and focus for me, working with different materials creating a flow or working with life models. Recently I have started to trust more in myself and my instincts, drawing from my head and heart. This shift has opened me up a new level of creativity.

How and where do you work?
I work with my bum in the air, mostly at home on the living room floor or in one of my favourite spots at the top of the International Bar on Wicklow Street, Dublin 2, where I’m very grateful to have my pop-up gallery, Ana Carey Gallery. Balancing curation for the gallery and creating my own art can be quite the juggling act, but as an artist, I find that both roles feed into each other. The audience reaction has increased, it keeps my artistic fire burning while allowing me to contribute to the larger art community. My main studio sits within the Backloft in La Catedral Studios in Dublin 8, a magical spot to work.

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your exhibition RAW and also your work in progress on your next exhibition?
The ‘RAW’ exhibition provided a genuine opportunity for me to connect with my audience. At the Ana Carey Gallery in the International Bar, I showcase pieces that I believe reflect my diverse talents and artistic journey, captured within the pages of my sketchbook. ‘RAW’ wasn’t just about displaying my work; it was a chance to engage with fellow artists, enthusiasts, and creating one of a kind collections. During my shows, I explore new forms inspired by volunteers and professional models, pushing my boundaries within the gallery setting. These collaborations taught me to open my heart and draw from my mind. With this newfound energy, I’m confident my next show “Magic in the Making” will be a triumph, bringing together live performance and street energy, allowing me to create spontaneous pieces in the moment.
